A Dance With Cruelty: the legacy of childhood emotional abuse

The truth is that outsiders can never know for sure what children within a family are experiencing. My own mother, too, was charming and humorous with strangers, especially men, but she was also an expert at inflicting emotional and psychological pain on her children. Only children themselves can tell us what their childhood is really like, and the Nigella story left me wondering why even now, as a society, we are so keen to discount and minimise adult children’s accounts of abuse – preferring words such as ‘difficult’ or ‘trying’ to ‘abusive’.
